Conservation work can be approached in many ways. The SPAB's ideas offer a tried and tested starting point for anyone approaching a conservation problem. These theories underpin much of UK conservation thinking, practice and legislation, yet can sometimes be at odds with other approaches. In this webinar, SPAB Director Matthew Slocombe will explain about the SPAB approach in a modern context, and ways in which the ideas expressed may differ from other conservation philosophies.

Damp is the enemy of old buildings and one of the most frequent issues that the SPAB is asked for advice on. In this session, the SPAB’s Technical and Research Director, Douglas Kent, explains the different forms of damp, what causes them, how they can be identified and the best ways to treat and prevent damp in old buildings.

Understanding the differences between traditional construction methods and materials and post-1919 cavity wall buildings is key to the successful repair and maintenance of old buildings. In this session, Douglas Kent, the SPAB’s Technical and Research Director, will give an overview of how traditional buildings were constructed, the materials that were used, and how this affects their performance.

Dr Robyn Pender is a Senior Building Conservation Adviser in Historic England’s Policy and Evidence directorate. A physicist with a PhD in moisture transfer in porous materials, and lead editor of the Building Environment volume in HE’s Practical Building Conservation series, she advises on all aspects of building performance, including damp, energy and carbon, and climate change issues. She will discuss the different methods of assessing building performance, and explain why environmental monitoring is important, particularly in old buildings.
