Nearly all the oak for the roof of the Banqueting Hall at Dartington was cut from the Hall’s own estate - only one tie-beam had to be obtained elsewhere, and it had been seasoned for three years before being sawn. The beams were hauled up by hand using the rope and pulley method which was heavy work as each of the six principle hammer-beam roof trusses weighed 3 ¼ tonnes.
