Initially the Earl wanted to rebuild large parts of the castle but was persuaded to instead reinstate the timer floors, repair the window tracery, battlements and gatehouse, and to build bridges over the moats.
Lord Curzon bequeathed the castle to the National Trust in 1925 and William Weir continued to work with the Trust on the castle after the Earl’s death.
