Our award for excellence in conservation at places of worship of all denominations and faiths drew a range of impressive entries in the England & Wales category. We were especially pleased to see the United Reformed Church, and Methodist buildings, represented this year.

The SPAB is run with the help of a great many passionate and committed volunteers. With our annual Guardians elections looming in mid-November, we thought it a good time to explain how the SPAB is structured and celebrate the role of our volunteers who serve on our committees.

Despite the pandemic, progress has been made this summer with roof repairs at the SPAB's Old House Project at St Andrew's, Boxley in Kent. The roof is an especially important and characterful feature of our Grade II* listed building.

As our Scholarship programme was sadly postponed, the SPAB scholars for 2020 - Amy Redman, Libby Watts and Lucy Newport - sought to find some spirit of the experience in a new challenge: a fundraising hike from the south to north Lakes

After helpful input from members, SPAB is reviewing its involvement with UCL surface coatings research. We are seeking to ensure traditional finishes are central to the study.

Despite the disruption caused by Covid-19 to its format this year, the SPAB’s Philip Webb Award drew a record-breaking number of entries, with 31 schemes received from individuals or teams who, between them, represent 19 schools of architecture across the UK.

Our friends the STBA (Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance) is campaigning for government to change the standard way household energy performance is presented. Ahead of our joint conference, here the STBA set out their proposal.
