Scotland’s Churches: Joseph Hansom’s Architecture

Join us for an online talk exploring the life and works of celebrated architect Joseph Hansom, also the designer of the famous Hansom Cab. 

Hansom was one of a few noted English Roman Catholic architects influenced by Pugin. He was responsible for a handful of Scottish churches including the church of St Mary at Lochee - a remarkable Gothic Revival church, with asymmetrical presbytery, octagonal five chancel tower and rich embellishments within the body of the church.  

This talk aims to highlight the richness of Scottish architecture in the ecclesiastical world. It complements an event compliments an in-person Church Maintenance Day being hosted at St Mary at Lochee the following week.

This talk will be of interest to anyone who enjoys history and architecture. It may be of particular interest to those attending the free How to Care for Your Church Workshop at St Mary’s on 25 September, to explore the background of this beautiful church.

Speaker

Our speaker is Dr Penelope Harris, who is currently writing a biography of Hansom.  Inspired by her interest in history and a family connection with Hansom, her PhD investigated the growth of the architectural profession in the nineteenth-century, using Hansom as a case study.
