Scotland’s Churches: Reading a Church

Have you ever wondered what all the parts of a church are called, and which bit is the oldest?   

If you know what to look for, it’s possible to uncover a building’s secrets by looking around for clues. This ‘reading’ of a building is a great skill, and we are lucky to be joined for this lecture by architect Ian Mitchell Davidson who has worked with churches in Aberdeenshire for many years. 

In this fascinating talk, Ian will take us through the development of a single building from beginning to end, tracing its history and development through the centuries.  

Who is this talk for?

This talk will be useful to early career architects, or other professionals with an interest in the heritage sector. It may also interest historians or those taking on responsibility for a church building.  

You will learn 

You will learn how to read a church building, including specialist terminology for areas of a church, and key identifiers for dating certain parts of a building.

Speaker

Ian Mitchell Davidson is an architect who worked for the National Trust for Scotland for many years and is now a private practitioner. Ian is also a SPAB Scotland Guardian.
