Event details

Thursday, 16 March starting at 14:00

Join our Hampshire Group for a visit to Bursledon Brickworks to see the Kiln roof replacement works, which are currently in progress.

The event will include an on-site talk by Giles Pritchard Architecture and a tour of the Brickworks, which was founded in 1897 by the Ashby family.

As the Brickworks website details, the original 1897 works (the southern complex) was added to in 1903 with the addition of the northern complex. This was further extended in 1935. With the extra capacity, the brickworks was producing in excess of 20 million bricks a year. They were one of the main producers of bricks in the region.

What makes the Brickworks so unusual is the fact that they were not updated during their working life. Turning them into a modern plant that could meet the safety requirements would have been almost impossible and the site closed in 1974.

In 2012, the site was transformed into a museum, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

You can read more about the current works to repair the Kiln here.

The event will last approximately two hours and the cost is £10 per person. Toilet facilities are available, but drinks and food are unlikely to be available. No PPE is required for this visit.

Please note: Railway and bus services are available but are some distance from the Brickworks itself.

Multiple bookings

As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About the Hampshire Group: The Hampshire Group reformed in 2022 and visits are now organised by Charlie Fraser-Fleming. Charlie is also chair of the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust. The Group plans a full programme of visits to historic sites around Hampshire, with a particular focus on live repair works.
