Event details

Thursday 17 October, 11am

Join the Devon Group on a visit to an isolated manor house in the hills north of Dartmoor, on the edge of the Cornish border.

Little changed since the mid 15th century, it bears architectural similarities to the nearby Cothele. A former owner declared it "one of the most beautiful houses of the late 15th century that I have ever seen".

After several changes in ownership, the house was bought by The Landmark Trust in 1969. Its repair was at the time the biggest project undertaken by the Trust. The project was recognised by a Civic Trust award, and it was one of the first sites visited by the SPAB Devon Group.

The building was recently closed for an extensive project; removing asbestos, replacing the heating system with ground source heat pumps and putting in underfloor heating. This is an opportunity to visit before the final phase of decorating and furnishing is completed.

How to get there

The address is Wortham Manor, Lifton, Launceston Cornwall, PL16 0ED.

There is plenty of parking space onsite. Access to Wortham Manor is via the farmers track and there will be dogs on site so please keep speed low.

Accessibility

This visit will involve significant periods of standing and walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

Access in and around Wortham is generally level, with the exception of the granite spiral steps to the first floor.
