Event details

Tuesday 23 July, 6 - 9pm

Join the London Group as we explore Borough Road and its place in British educational history.

Led by Dr David Hampshire, we’ll explore the fascinating story of this road which was created in 1750 to allow access to the West End without the need to go through the City of London.

In 1798, Joseph Lancaster set up a universal free school on Borough Road which became the first teacher training institute in the British Empire. The walk will incorporate some of the significant landmarks on Borough Road, explore more of its history and impact and why the National School, also on this road, was an example of fierce resistance to Lancaster’s efforts and methods.

The walk will end with a drinks reception on a nearby roof terrace, with stunning views across the Thames and Southwark.
