The Merchant's House is an outstanding example of the great merchants' houses built following a fire in Marlborough in 1653. It is a fine timber and brick building, built 1653-1700. The interior is brilliant with wall paintings, panelling and a commanding oak staircase. A lot of this fabric survives and previously hidden painted decoration is being revealed.
The main building fronts the high street and is timber-framed but the rear is brick. There are original oak windows, the glazing is a 19th century replacement but thought to be close to the original. The house is about to undergo some structural repairs and it is hoped we will learn about these on the visit.
Booking is not necessary for this visit. Our guide will meet us at the house at 1.30pm, the cost is £10 per person. The house is easy to find since it has a shop on its ground floor, it's near the pub called The Globe on the high street. There is plenty of parking along the high street and in the middle of the very wide street.
Marlborough is a very beautiful town with a range of different architectural styles and a whole host of shops and places to eat.
You don't need to prebook for this visit, but please bring £10 cash with you on the day to pay for your place.
This visit follows our trip to Marlborough College, which is taking place in the morning of the same day. Pre-booking is required for the Marlborough College visit.

About the Gloucestershire Regional Group
Lynne Pardoe, Group Organiser, says "It was ten years ago when I came to live in Gloucestershire and, surprised by the absence of a SPAB group, I started one. Since then its gone from strength to strength, with a steady core of regular attenders and an ever changing background of newer members. Since I don’t work in the field of conservation I rely on suggestions to arrange visits which don’t usually open for the public and thankfully, because I’ve been running it so long people know me and will make suggestions, or offer up their own properties for a visit. I love this."
Accessibility: please contact the Group Organiser before booking to discuss any special access requirements.
