Friday 12 May 2023, 2.30-4pm
Gordon Le Pard retired marine archaeologist will lead us on an exploration of Rufus Castle and the ruins of St Andrews Church. What remains of Rufus Castle was built in 1450 and was one of the first buildings to incorporate gunports, two hundred and fifty years later it was re-purposed as a romantic ruin in the grounds of the new, Pennsylvania Castle.
St Andrews Church was the original parish church badly damaged by land movement in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It too became a feature in the landscaped gardens of Pennsylvania castle and suffered bomb damage during the second world war.
Please note: Our visit will involve a short walk around the outside of the castle and will take the footpath to St Andrews Church which involves steps and is rough underfoot. Stout footwear required.
