Scotand's Churches in Transitio: Planning for the Future

Join us for this one-day CPD Conference for decision makers across the planning and built environment sector.

Right now, a huge number of churches are in transition, with some in the process of being assessed and sold on the open market. Changes of use and ownership such as these may often mean the sites will no longer be covered by Ecclesiastical Exemption.

This event is primarily designed to:

• support local and planning authority decision makers to better understand the implications of potential changes to these sites
•  empower those making decisions by increasing understanding about church buildings and their special or historic features, including stained glass
• provide networking between local and planning authority decision makers and those actively involved in owning, managing or running places of worship; funding places of worship; giving heritage advice, and any national organisation that has an interest in the sustainability of communities who may become owners of places of worship.

Speakers

Sara Crofts: Chair of the Places of Worship Forum

Historic Environment Scotland: Representation from various teams including Ruth Cameron, Craig Stanford, Strategic Heritage Policy Officer - Heritage Policy and World Heritage Service.

Rebecca Cadie: ARPL Architects. Rebecca works with many churches and will present a selection of case studies.

Eilidh Henderson: Page Park Architects. The practice were the architects for the first conversion of the Ramshorn in 1983, and Eilidh will present a summary of what happened, and subsequent projects to modernise and adapt the building to keep it in use.

Moira Malcolm: Chair of the ICON Stained Glass Group and director of Rainbow Glass. Moira will give us an overview of the importance of Scottish Stained glass and how to approach any you might find in churches.

Deborah Kent & Gordon Barr: Fife Historic Buildings Trust and the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) jointly speaking about good decision-making at the local level.

Location

The Ramshorn is a former church converted in the 1980s to a theatre and events space - it seemed a very fitting venue for this event. It is in central Glasgow, easily accessible from Glasgow Queen Street Station.
