The Old Sun Inn
The Old Sun Inn is an enchanting and much-cherished Grade I-listed 14th-century building in Saffron Walden, Essex with renowned pargeting – decorative plasterwork - dating from the 17th century. Originally medieval houses and later an inn, the building was saved by the SPAB’s former property holding arm, the Ancient Buildings Trust, in the 1930s and for the past 50 years has accommodated an antiques and bookshop. Douglas Kent, SPAB Technical and Research Director, who has owned part of the property for some years, has very recently acquired the remainder. Major work is planned. Members will have the opportunity to hear about this and enjoy a tour of the building.
AGM
A brief AGM for the Essex Regional Group will be held at the start of the evening.
Buffet Dinner
As ever, delicious food, drink and convivial company will form vital ingredients for the evening, together with a raffle with prizes donated by Bakers of Danbury. A superb two-course buffet dinner will be provided. The menu will include the following options:
Main Course
- Dressed salmon
- Ham platter
- Selection of vegetarian quiches
Salads
- Potato salad
- Coleslaw
- Green salad
- Beetroot and sweetcorn salad
- French bread and butter
Dessert
- Cherry cheesecake
- Chocolate gateau with fresh cream
Programme
The programme for the evening will be as follows:
- 6.00pm Tea/coffee on arrival
- 6.15pm AGM
- 6.30pm Talk and informal tour of building
- 7.30pm Dinner and raffle
- 10.00pm Carriages
A more detailed programme along with maps and directions will be sent to registered participants the week before the event.
Booking
The ticket price of £30 includes a welcome glass of wine or fruit juice, with the opportunity to buy further drinks by the glass. As there is no charge for the venue, the ticket price is less than last year despite the rise in catering costs.
Multiple bookings
As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.
About the Essex Regional Group
The SPAB Essex Regional Group was formed in 2000 and has been active ever since. The types of visits are fun, interesting and educational with an annual social event, normally in an historic building. Our participants vary from interested SPAB members wanting to enhance their knowledge of historic buildings to professionals using the visits as part of their continuing professional development programme.
