1 - 3pm
Join the SPAB Yorkshire Regional Group for an exciting opportunity to explore the repair works to the roof of the Grade II* Listed Cannon Hall.
Cannon Hall was constructed at the start of the 18th century, presumably by architect John Etty of York and joiner William Thornton. In the mid 1760s the hall was enlarged by John Carr of York, adding the wings and contributing to the interior finishes.
The hall was sold to Barnsley Council in 1951 and was opened to the public in 1957. Today, it provides a museum, park and gardens with a large collection of artwork. The essential repair works to the roof are funded by a Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) and will allow the hall to continue to exhibit and safeguard its collections.
Architects Donald Insall Associates will be leading a tour of the scaffold and rooftop to explain the works being undertaken. The house and parklands are free to visit and will be open on the day of the tour.
Accessibility
As this is a visit to view the live construction works on the roof of Cannon Hall, access will be provided via a scaffold and stair. Please be aware that there are steps up the scaffold and a high viewing platform. Surfaces may be uneven or slippery and there will be significant periods of standing.
Please see the Cannon Hall Museum website for accessibility provisions within the Museum.
