Event details
Monday 4 September, 11.30am-4pm
Join us for a visit to two fascinating historic buildings in Dover. We'll meet at 11.30am at St Edmund’s Chapel, which was the medieval mortuary chapel of Maison Dieu.
After lunch, which can be bought from a café or pub in the town centre, we will head to Maison Dieu for 2pm.
Maison Dieu, Dover Town Hall, is Grade I listed and conservation and repair work is taking place under a National Lottery funded project. We will be guided by the two key architects working on the project, Rena Pitsilli-Graham and Tom Gibb.
Martin Crowther, the Project Engagement Officer, will be on hand to talk about the community archaeology, recent in depth research into Maison Dieu history, and how the building and its stories will be interpreted once it re-opens.
Hard hats are required for the Maison Dieu visit as conservation work is ongoing (hard hats and high vis jackets will be provided). Full details about the building and how to find it are on their website.
Practicalities
There are numerous public car parks in the centre of the town; see Dover District Council website for details.
Lunch can be purchased from a cafe or pub in town, for example Wellington’s Coffee House and Bar, a historic building directly over the road from the main entrance to Maison Dieu.
