Event details
Thursday 24 April 6.30pm to 8.30pm
Join SPAB Chair Duncan McCallum on a walk from Turnham Green through old Chiswick and along the Thames to Hammersmith Bridge. SPAB founder William Morris spent much of the last 20 years of his life here and we will briefly visit Kelmscott House, now owned by the William Morris Society, during our walk. We will see the world’s first garden suburb, Bedford Park, William Hogarth’s house, Old Chiswick’s charming historic buildings, and the old ferry landing.
Walking downstream will take us to Chiswick Mall and Hammersmith Upper Mall. We will hear about the many ‘characters’ associated with this area, often artists. We will walk past the sites of the 1906 suffragette ’Siege of Hammersmith’, the Dove pub (where ‘Rule Britannia’ may have been written), the Doves Press and Bindery (printer of W Morris literature), on to a pub by Hammersmith Bridge and, weather permitting, sunset over the river. The walk will end there.
From that point it is a ten-minute walk to Hammersmith tube (Piccadilly, District, Circle and Hammersmith and City lines) and the bus station. Or you can walk over the bridge to catch a bus to Barnes, Richmond or Wandsworth.
