Join the Sussex Group for the chance to see a team of specialist timber-frame carpenters in action near Horsham, West Sussex.

This morning visit will give members access to see a team of specialist timber-frame carpenters in action near Horsham, West Sussex. There will be a chance to meet Stephen Curtis, Director of Greenman Carpentry, who cut his teeth at the Weald and Downland Living Museum in Singleton. Formed in 2007, Greenman Carpentry originally specialised in the repair of historic timber frames but has expanded their remit over the years to include most areas of building conservation. Stephen will show the group around their latest project in Maplehurst, south of Horsham and will talk about the various machines and traditional hand tools used by the carpenters. The aim of the project is to pick apart and identify the different phases of building and restore the frame to its original condition.

We will see the carpenters at work on a traditional, timber framed cottage which dates to the early 16th century. The cottage is currently being repaired in-line with Listed Building Consent and has been much altered over the years, starting off life as a much smaller cottage with a smoke bay. This was increased by two bays either side and was much altered in the early 20th century.
