Event details
Saturday 10 May 10am – 5pm
Join the Wales and Marches Group on a visit to three sites in the village of Clifford, Herefordshire.
We will first go to Clifford Castle, Grade I listed and a scheduled ancient monument, the site is shared with a 20th century dwelling. Keith Hill, the owner of the site and dwelling will give a talk about the responsibilities of living on such a site and the work that he and his family have undertaken since being there.
Cars can then be taken the mile-long journey on to St Mary’s Church where there is parking. We will then meet the archaeologist excavating the 1880’s floor of the church, including disarticulated burials. Adrian Hadley and Deborah Johnson will explain how the excavations are affecting our understanding of the church and its relationship to the historic landscape.
Packed lunches can be eaten in the churchyard, overlooking the stunning landscape of the Black Mountains to the south.
The afternoon visit is just across the road from the church, at the Old Vicarage. Here the building owner, William Bullough, will talk us through the phases of this building and its relationship to the surrounding historic landscape.
