Event details
Friday 23rd May 10am
Join the Essex and Suffolk Group on a visit to Bulmer Brick and Tile company. We’ll also be visiting nearby Griggs Farmhouse, which is undergoing conservation work. We’ll be donning hard hats for this part of the day.
Bulmer Brick and Tile company is a family-run, traditional brick company who have worked on several local conservation projects including, Layer Marney Towers, Helmingham Hall, St Oysths Priory, Melford Hall, as well as Hampton Court Palace and St Pancras Station.
The visit includes a talk by Peter Minter and a tour of their brick yard where they dig the London Clay, hand-make the bricks, air-dry and then fire finished products.
Grigg’s Farmhouse is a private dwelling house undergoing extensive repairs. This is a limited opportunity to see parts of the frame and a host of original figures internally. The building is heavy timber frame said to be late 17th century, but has evidence of much early medieval hall house construction. The house has been owned by the same family for over a century and is a time warp of history.
The site has an abattoir building, bake / wash house, deep well and underground wash tank. The new owner will be talking about the things that they have discovered and the past history of the owners and lodgers which used this building over the years.
